I love traveling in Oregon because I always seem to come across hidden gems. While traveling through Cottage Grove I made a pit stop at a gas station. On the wall in the store was a photo of Skylight Cave. Having never seen or even heard about it, I asked where it was. The clerk told me the name and that it was in Central Oregon somewhere near Bend. Then began the research. The cave is on BLM land with a dirt access road and no cell service, so if you ever go, download your map first. If you want to go when the sunbeams shine through the openings at the top of the cave like I did, then the only time of year is near the Summer Solstice when the sun is at it's highest point in the Northern Hemisphere. Apparently there used to be a ladder down into the cave, but it was gone when I went there in 2020. Thankfully someone had stacked some logs with short branches to shimmy down the 10 to 15 feet drop it takes to get in and out of the cave. While the sunbeams looked amazing on their own, I did have someone sprinkle some pummy dirt (local term for volcanic pumice dust) down into the cave openings to get that extra definition that takes the photo to the next level.
